A family business that started with a very full garage
Welwyn Roofbox Hire began in 2015 with a problem familiar to many of our customers: where do you keep a roofbox when you’re not using it?
Our own 630-litre Thule roofbox was brilliant on the car, but rather less convenient in an already full garage. It took up a huge amount of space for something we only needed occasionally.
We realised that other families must be facing the same dilemma. Why buy and store a roofbox all year when you only need the extra space for a few trips?
And so Welwyn Roofbox Hire was born.
More space, without the commitment of buying
The principle remains simple: give customers the extra carrying space they need, when they need it, without the expense of buying equipment or finding somewhere to store it afterwards.
As we got to know our customers, we found that their needs went well beyond holiday luggage. Family bikes, university belongings, skiing equipment and bulky loads all brought different challenges.
Today, we offer Thule roofboxes, roofbars, roof-mounted and towbar-mounted bike carriers, towbar cargo carriers, ski carriers and ladder carriers.

We’re a family business, with seven of us involved at different times to help meet the seasonal peaks.
In 2019, we moved to our current premises in Datchworth, Hertfordshire. From here, we’ve grown to hold the South East’s largest stock of Thule roofboxes — over 140 — supported by an extensive range of roofbars and vehicle-specific fitting kits.
That depth of stock gives us more options when matching equipment to customers’ cars and journeys. But the approach is still personal: practical advice, careful fitting and friendly service.

We take care of the fitting
Hiring equipment should make your trip easier.
For roofbox hire, we supply compatible Thule roofbars where needed, professionally fit the equipment and give you a hands-on demonstration. We also measure your car’s fitted height, explain the practical checks you need to make and remove the equipment after your hire.
Visit us in Datchworth by appointment, or ask about delivery and collection, normally available within 25–30 miles. Charges and availability are confirmed with your quotation.
If you already own equipment, we also offer professional fitting. And if buying makes more sense for you, ask about our new, as-new and used stock, including ex-hire equipment.
