A little preparation makes for a smoother journey. Here are a few practical checks to make before travelling with a roofbox, based on our experience fitting Thule equipment and helping customers get their trips sorted since 2015.
Know your fitted vehicle height
We measure and confirm your car’s height with the equipment fitted. Save that measurement somewhere easy to check, such as your phone, and make sure anyone else driving the car knows it too.
Check clearance before entering car parks, driving under barriers or using drive-throughs. A familiar entrance may no longer be suitable once your roofbox is fitted.
Pack for the shape of the roofbox
Soft bags generally make better use of the available space than rigid suitcases. If something is awkward to lift to roof height, divide it into smaller loads where practical.
Keep luggage clear of the locking mechanism, secure the contents with the supplied straps and allow the lid to close and lock without forcing it.
Our guide to what you can put in a roofbox explains more about suitable luggage and packing.
Check the weight allowance
The amount you can carry depends on the limits for your car, roofbar system and roofbox. Your vehicle’s roof-load allowance includes the bars, fitting equipment, roofbox and contents.
A roofbox’s stated load capacity is therefore not automatically your available luggage allowance. Follow your vehicle handbook and the instructions for the equipment fitted. Ask us if you are unsure.
Plan for your route and destination
Check whether your accommodation, parking or campsite has any access restrictions. Give ferry or vehicle shuttle operators accurate vehicle details, including the fitted height, where required.
If travelling abroad, check current requirements for the countries you will visit, including any seasonal equipment requirements.
Allow time for a final check
Before setting off, check that the roofbox is properly closed and locked, the contents are secured and you have followed the checks demonstrated at fitting. Keep the keys accessible and make sure other drivers understand how the equipment works.
If anything does not look or feel right, contact us before driving. We would much rather answer a question before your trip than have you travel with a concern.
Support comes with your hire
At fitting, we demonstrate how to use your equipment and explain the checks relevant to your setup. We also share our full WRH Travel Guide with customers, bringing together further practical advice gathered through our own experience and customer feedback.
This page provides general preparation tips. Always follow the instructions for your vehicle and the equipment fitted.
